Willow Winsham

Book - 2022

Why are Celtic fairies behind our compulsion to knock on wood? How is a Norse myth responsible for our fear of the number 13? And why might an ancient Byzantine war strategy make us wary of spilling salt? A fascinating and mystical tumble through thousands of years of curious traditions, Very Superstitious gets to the root of just why we practice these rituals. From keeping new shoes off the table to nailing a horseshoe above the door, so many of our habits are informed by beliefs handed down through generations. Weaving between folklores, religions, cultures and traditions, Very Superstitious is a beautifully illustrated exploration of 100 of the most curious beliefs from around the world. In telling the stories of how we came to adopt the...se superstitions and their place in our lives today, this peculiar history explores human nature itself.

Even the most rational individuals will occasionally display some form of superstition. Step on a crack, walk under a ladder, spill some salt--these simple actions seem to push an internal response. Witchcraft historian Winsham highlights 100 of these beliefs. Some are common, like the bad luck of breaking a mirror, while some are more obscure, like the many meanings behind walking backwards. Each superstition has a page of explanation that sometimes gives cultural framing, sometimes describes how a specific event is differently interpreted over time, and sometimes just shows that the practice is unexplained. Each has a colorful, poster-like illustration. But be assured, this is a casual, fun look at superstitions, with little real religious or anthropological context given to the commentary. Rather than a source for research, this will serve to settle bets and lightly inform. This is an easy, enjoyable romp, suitable for circulating collections.
