While grieving her recently deceased father, Sophie Shah discovers a shocking secret about her mother, Nita, who she was told had died when she was young. The truth is that Nita didn't die but instead left her family to pursue her dream of painting in Paris. This discovery sends Sophie away from her comfortable life in Ahmedabad on a journey where she'll discover more about the mother she barely knew and also more about herself. Nita Shah wants to fit into the role her Indian community expects of her, but her artistic drive is too strong, and Nita knows she can never be the mother Sophie deserves. When Nita arrives in Paris, she feels like she can finally be who she wants to be. But dreams come at a cost that Nita may not be able to pay. Shah's sophomore novel (after The Taste of Ginger, 2022) is an absorbing and emotional read that follows two women on their journeys to self-discovery while breaking from social confines; their experiences will resonate with readers.
