Little monster, what pan dulce do you want? Monstruito ¿qué pan dulce quieres?

Ana C. Esparza

Book - 2022

Little monster, do you want a pan dulce? What about a beso? Maybe a concha or an oreja? A gaggle of little monsters politely decline the narrator's offerings, floating and swirling and twirling away when it's not the pan dulce they are craving for tonight's spooky festivities. It takes a few tries for the narrator to finally guess right -- just in time to celebrate the end of Halloween and the beginnings of Día de Muertos.

Baby-Toddler--An array of unique and adorable little monsters is gathered together as a calaca offers them delicious sweet bread. Would a little ghost love a concha? Perhaps a little devil and a spider would like an oreja? Normally the little monsters would love any of these sweet breads; what could they be craving now? Pan de muerto! The little monsters are revealed to be young children who are just finishing up their Halloween festivities. As Día de los Muertos is now arriving, the sweet bread on their mind is the special pan de muerto that is enjoyed during this time. Bold, bright backgrounds combine perfectly with close-ups of pan dulce and the colorful and unique little monsters, culminating in a festive spread depicting the children and their caregiver enjoying the sweet bread and the festivities. Large, easy-to-read text is included in English (in yellow font) and Spanish (in white font). A final spread shares information about eight delicious pan dulces. VERDICT An excellent addition to bilingual board book collections, and a perfect choice for Halloween and Día de los Muertos.--Selenia Paz
