Review by Library Journal Review

Sutherland, a restauranteur, entrepreneur, and TV personality who hails from St. Paul, MN, has written a buzzy cookbook that infuses southern comfort with the midwestern charm of his diverse family. He introduces his take on soul food with a variety of basic recipe foundations (spices, rubs, sauces, pickles). The book covers all the major soul food favorites but also includes Sutherland's unique variations (chicken and ricotta-ramp dumplings). Each spread is accompanied by a narrative, including family stories and food descriptions that reveal Sutherland's passion for his mouth-watering ingredients. Best of all, his voice conveys his passion for teaching people to cook and to share meals the way his family did. Asha Belk's photography provides even more delectable detail in close-up images that make the dishes shine. VERDICT Sutherland proves that the diaspora of soul food to the Midwest has only added to the comfort, flavor, and love it represents. Readers looking for delicious recipes and inspiration in the kitchen will want to dig in.--Sarah Tansley
