Orphan Ruby, who holds the power of fire in her hands, has only just barely escaped the reign of the vile Frost King, by destroying the frost throne at the end of Frostblood (2016). She still has nightmares, however, about the cursed spirit the Minax that she set free with that act of distraction, and worries that it will come not only for her but also for her friend and lover, the new Frostblood king, Arcus. Being courted by a young king thrusts Ruby into politics; she's now hated and used by both her friends and members of the old king's court. When the opportunity to escape the Frostblood kingdom on a mission to southern lands arises, she takes it, never expecting how much more complicated her life will become. Worse, she might be developing feelings for her new traveling companion, Kai, a Fireblood like Ruby. Ruby, who deals with the trauma of her nightmares, is an interesting, layered character. Fans of the first adventure will definitely be drawn to this sequel.--Comfort, Stacey Copyright 2017 Booklist

Gr 7 Up-This follow-up to Frostblood picks up shortly after Ruby Otrera, the last remaining Fireblood in Tempesia, defeated the mad Frost King by burning his throne. Ruby is now living in the castle and trying to fit in as a lady of the court. Arcus, now King Arkanus, and Brother Thistle are still some of her only allies. Unfortunately, the Minax that had once possessed King Rasmus is now terrorizing the kingdom of Tempesia. When a mysterious stranger appears at a Frost Court ball, Ruby decides to accompany him to Sudesia. Arcus is against her plan, but Ruby knows that the world will never be safe unless the Minax is destroyed. Ruby and the stranger make the journey south to the land of the Firebloods in hopes of becoming Fireblood Masters and earning the trust of the Fireblood Queen. Once there, Ruby will seek the knowledge needed to destroy the Minax, as well as uncover the mysteries of her own past. Despite the use of some well-known tropes (a brief love triangle), this is a satisfying sequel. The plot is well paced and engaging, and the characters, both old and new, are exactly what readers will expect. VERDICT A solid second installment book. Ruby defeated the evil Frost King (Frostblood) and now lives in her beloved King Arcus's Frostblood court. However, the evil Minax creature is loose and killing innocent people, so Ruby and fellow Fireblood Kai travel south to win the Fire Queen's trust and help. Ice, fire, and--unsurprisingly--a love triangle collide for another conventional fantasy adventure. (c) Copyright 2019. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
