Steve Foxe

Book - 2022

Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham hits the PIG time... in Hollywood! Just in time for Into the Spider-Verse 2, everyone's favorite part pig/part spider/all super hero is back, and this time he's taking on Hollywood! Legendary director Sam Ramie has acquired the rights to bring Spider-Ham's spectacular story to the silver screen. There's only one, itsy-bitsy problem: Spider-Ham didn't sell those rights, and Ramie is getting the origin all wrong--making our hero out to be a monstrous menace! Once he catches wind of the perilous production, Peter Porker uses his Daily Beagle connections to secure on-set credentials, where he not so subtly tries to improve the film's depiction of his alter ego and fix all th...e continuity errors in the movie. Behind the scenes, Porker soon discovers that his criminal foes the Swinester Six are bankrolling the entire operation, in a bid to convince the residents of New Yolk City that their porcine protector is a threat who must be eliminated. Now, Spider-Ham must face down an army of ninja production assistants, some truly shoddy CGI, and his archenemies to prevent this box-office bomb from blowing up his reputation! Will everyone's favorite pig clear his name? Or is this porky protector headed from the cutting room floor?

Everyone's favorite superpowered ham is back for an all-new adventure, with the same silliness fans of the first volume will expect. Peter Porker's friend Mary Jane Waterbuffalo runs into our hero on her way to Hollywood to star in the brand new movie Swinester: The Totally Authorized and Legitimate Spider-Ham Story. She shares the news of her casting, and Spider-Ham instantly questions the legitimacy of the movie, since he's certainly never authorized anything! He travels with her to Hollywood, where he discovers his suspicions where correct; there's definitely something sinister going on with this production. Full of jokes and over-the-top humor, this sequel will leave readers squealing with laughter, and Amin's colorful cartoon artwork is the perfect match for the humorous tone of the story. Young Spider-Man fans who like their web-slinger stories on the silly side will want to join Spider-Ham and Mary Jane Waterbuffalo as they investigate this mysterious movie set and kick some serious butt in the process!

Review by Kirkus Book Review

Peter Porker is hamming it up in Hollywood. Spider-Ham, an alternate version of Spider-Man from a universe where anthropomorphic animals are the norm, sets his sights on Hollywood when he learns that the lovely Mary Jane Waterbuffalo is starring in a movie by proclaimed director Alfred Peacock. Oddly though, Spider-Ham seems be the antagonist in this cinematic outing. Traveling to Los Angelfish and finding a way into the studio, Spider-Ham uncovers treachery in the form of the Swinester Six: Mysteriape, Raven the Hunter, Buzzard (who's actually an Opossum), Sandmanatee, Eelectro, and Doctor Octopussy Cat. With help from Mary Jane, Porker is able to save the day and stop the Swinester Six. Along the way, readers who love the Marvel characters will giggle at the various animal-themed cameos of popular characters and Peter Porker's general bumbling. It's an amusing graphic novel for younger or reluctant readers and one that should have a lot of popular appeal on school or library shelves. The artwork is bright and inviting, and even readers who aren't that familiar with all the Marvel references will still be able to enjoy the story. Adults will appreciate that Mary Jane plays a more proactive role than just "damsel in distress" and has a big role in ultimately saving Spider-Ham from the baddies. This ham is sweet enough for readers to want seconds. (Graphic novel. 7-10) Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
