Gr 3--7--In the sequel to The Hatmakers, Cordelia still believes her father, Captain Hatmaker, is missing, not dead, and intends to use the map he left behind to find him. With help from a mysterious Mapmaker society, the rival Maker families, the magic that surrounds her everywhere, and her friends, Cordelia sets off to find her father and stop Lord Witloof and his evil plan. This book is fast-paced, magical, adventurous, and kicks off right where the first ended. The mysteries, puzzles, and elements of real places and people in history add an exciting flair as well. Kids should read the first in the series in order to understand plot points and characters. The glossary of fictional terms used is as imaginative as the plot itself. There are no recaps of the characters' physical descriptions in this sequel. VERDICT A gripping adventure with rich worldbuilding perfect for fans of Harry Potter and historical fantasy.--Maeve Dodds
