In 2021, a young woman with terminal cancer decides to have her body cryogenically preserved, hoping that the future will hold a cure for her disease. Medical technology and political ideology can be uneasy companions, as is the case when, 100 years later, Alabene is reanimated by a shadowy group of rebels called Resurrectionists, whose mission is to save the millions of people who have frozen their bodies. The Awoken, as they're known, are considered illegal, relentlessly hunted by a government that espouses democracy but is in reality a totalitarian regime, using the Awoken as a convenient scapegoat for society's problems. Alabene joins the rebels and embarks on a dangerous mission to liberate the Awoken, all while desperately searching for her lost love, the man who supported her throughout her illness. Documentary filmmaker Howes' debut novel treats readers to a reflective, futuristic adventure story that's full of twists and turns while also offering thoughtful commentary on issues that are all too real in our here and now: medical ethics, equity and inclusion, and personal freedom.

Monroe Howes's frenetic if flawed debut imagines a dystopia in which people "awoken" from cryogenic sleep face a brutal extermination campaign. Outlaw "Resurrectionists" bring 23-year-old Alabine Rivers back to life 101 years after she died from cancer and had her body frozen in 2020. Reanimation has been declared illegal and the "awoken" are killed on sight in the reformed United America, where traditional gender norms reign and cultural and religious differences are repressed. The Resurrectionists, stationed at a camp in the largely deserted Chicago, explain to Alabine that she's the poster child for awoken rights because of her boyfriend Max Green's impassioned activism in support of reanimation before his death. Then the Resurrectionists' leaders are arrested, spurring a failed rescue attempt during which government agents capture Alabine. Resisting the secretary of science's demand that she betray her comrades, she escapes and becomes the leader of a Resurrectionist cell that's determined to disrupt the president's plans to blow up a massive cryogenic storage facility in Atlanta. However, when Alabine finds out Max's body is being stored in New York, she decides it's more important to travel there to reanimate him, setting up a showdown between Alabine and her supporters over their strategy. Monroe Howes's inventive worldbuilding holds interest, but a few too many close calls and fortuitous escapes stretch believability, and the meaty ideas get lost in the jumbled plot. Twenty-three-year-old Alabine Rivers died in 2020 from cancer. She was then cryogenically frozen and wakes a century later to a completely changed world. Technology is used only by those in power, and people like her, the Awoken, are illegal and can be killed on sight. Alabine joins the militia group who woke her--the Resurrectionists--who are fighting for the rights of the Awoken. Unfortunately, while the plot is captivating, Howes's debut suffers from too many characters with too little depth. Relationships seem one-dimensional, as the characters spend too much time fleeing from different locations to have meaningful interactions. Additionally, there is much info dumping and telling over showing, which results in an occasionally dull listen, as there is little to keep the plot moving along. The audio is solidly performed by narrator Sarah Naughton. Naughton ably distinguishes character voices, but even with her help, listeners may struggle to keep track of the many characters. VERDICT This audiobook is a disappointment to sci-fi fans but may interest some patrons hoping to dip their toes into a new genre.--Danielle Arpin

A resurrected cancer patient must fight for her right to exist in this speculative fiction debut. Shortly after Alabine Rivers falls in love with Max Green, she discovers she has lymphoma. Her oncologist is initially optimistic, but when it becomes clear that Alabine is going to die at age 23, she and Max start fundraising for her only remaining option: cryogenics. The plan is for CryoLabs to preserve and maintain Alabine's body until science finds a way to cure her and bring her back--hopefully no more than a few decades from now. It comes as a surprise, then, when Alabine regains consciousness a century later in an abandoned cryo clinic swarming with armed soldiers. Rebels dubbed Resurrectionists spirit Alabine away and reveal that the eastern half of the former U.S. is now United America, a fiercely nationalistic, aggressively anti-technology country that forbids the revivification of cryogenically preserved humans despite the fact that there are millions. Upon arriving at a Chicago refugee camp full of fellow "Awoken," Alabine learns that resurrection was actually legal for quite some time thanks to a campaign waged by Max and centered on her. The U.A.'s president intends to soon destroy a large Atlanta cryo facility and its contents, effectively committing genocide, so the Resurrectionists woke Alabine to help sway public opinion. Alabine protests--until the rebels disclose that Max is also frozen, and they plan to liberate and resuscitate him, as well. Howes thoughtfully extrapolates from current events to create a chilling, all-too-plausible future. Vividly sketched, deeply sympathetic characters and high-stakes, adrenaline-fueled plotting propel the tale to a cathartic close. Intelligent, action-packed, and emotionally charged. 1 I was 124 years old when I came back to life. First there was warmth. Not sit-by-the-fire-with-a-cup-of-hot-cocoa warmth that fills your bones. This was an uncomfortable dry heat that my soul wanted nothing to do with. It spread like poison through my parched veins. There was an incompatible opposition between this unnatural warmth and a primal cold I felt deeply imbedded in the pit of my stomach. A godforsaken cold I'd never be rid of and can feel to this day. This cold is only known to other people like me-though we rarely talk about it. It's a reminder of our first lives. Of our death. A scar of the darkness that can never entirely leave us. My body demanded breath, but when I opened my mouth, a fluid that tasted like batteries flooded inside me. I gagged and choked, not even having the air to cough. A thick plastic surrounded me, suctioned against my skin, holding my body oppressively tight. I pushed and writhed as hard as I could, desperate to get away. Everything felt wrong. The heartbeat in my chest, the vibrations of sound in my ears-I wanted none of it. Then the synthetic womb that had been my home for 101 years suddenly opened like an upside-down Ziploc bag. I fell. But the ground came quickly. The shock of colliding with the earth forced me, like a newborn foal, to take my first breath. Back arched. Neck rigid. A hoarse inhale filled my dusty lungs. Devouring the newly found oxygen, my heart quickened, painfully beating like a sledgehammer against my ribs. Blood pushed its way, uninvited, through my arteries. Inching up my chest, then my neck, until it pooled behind my eyes with so much pressure I feared they would pop out of my skull. Something wasn't right. This wasn't right. I wasn't all right. I had no idea where I was or even why I was. In that moment, I couldn't remember anything, not my name, not Max, not my death. All I could think about was the darkness calling me back to it, begging for me to allow it to consume my body. It was angry, and so was I. I wanted to sleep. Being dead is exhausting. It's like those nights you fall asleep and then feel as if you wake up only a moment later. You know a long time has passed, and you don't know what your body was doing, but it definitely was not resting. My eyes fluttered closed and I found myself slowly drifting back to sleep. Back to the sinister and welcoming darkness. Before it wrapped itself around me yet again, I heard- "Wake up, Al." The voice was comforting and loving. "It's time to get up." Finally I opened my eyes, and there he was. Max. My Max. In his soft gaze was a lifetime of love-a love that I didn't yet remember but instantly recognized as ours. He reached out his hand. Magnetically, I was compelled to take it. To accept the warmth. The darkness pulling me down was no competition anymore. Not to those eyes. The sensation of blood rushing through my body began to feel less odd. My cells vibrated with hope. I took the hand of this man I knew but couldn't quite place. When we touched, my fingers tingled as they fused into his as we each became whole. It only lasted a moment. As quickly as he appeared, he was gone. The truth was, I was alone. Alone and naked. Like Eve, I became embarrassingly aware of my bare body and attempted to cover myself. After a century of death, not even knowing my own name, twenty-three years of sexual repression and bodily shame were still ingrained in me. "Hello, Alabine Rivers." It was that voice again. Except this time, it wasn't Max. This was real. The unfamiliar voice crackled through the speakers in the room. "Hello?" I responded in a daze. I pushed my heavy atrophied body to a stand, wobbling around on weak and unsteady legs. The cold inside me, while still very much there, faded into the distance as life took me in its clutches. My eyes still struggled to find focus. Through the blurry patches of darkness and faded colors, I saw in front of me the soft outline of a woman's face. She was familiar, but I didn't know why. The embodiment of dZj^ vu. Her intense gaze met mine as her features poured out of the contours of her face like she was a mirage-a ghost unable to firmly root themselves to this world or the next. Utterly transfixed, and pushing through the haze of my reconstituting vision, I reached my hand out toward her. Immediately, my fingers stubbed into a glass barrier between us. Pressing my hand against the clammy translucent wall, I came to the gut-wrenching realization that this woman was no ghost: she was me. My reflection. Except the girl in the glass looked wrong. She had no hair, sunken cheeks, chapped lips, and a rigid pain in her eyes. Panicking, and wanting to get as far away as I could from the haunted girl in my reflection, I reached behind me only to find yet another solid glass wall. I was trapped, having fallen from the plastic bag into a glass box. One coffin to another. The walls towered high beyond the reach of my fingertips. Claustrophobia overwhelmed me as I started to hyperventilate and pound the glass cage with my fists. "Please stay calm," the voice over the speakers said reassuringly. I didn't. I couldn't. Instead, no longer feeling breath fill my lungs, I collapsed back to the metal ground. The darkness crept in closer, excited that I was returning to it, where I belonged. "You're going into shock. Breathe!" The disembodied voice kept me tethered to the real world as a high-pitched medical alarm blared. Then a man jumped down into my cage with a loud thud. In my tunneled vision, I could barely see the blurred outline of his body. With an intensity that conveyed my life hung in the balance, he pulled my rag-doll body into his. I forced my eyes on him, but all I saw was Max, and the chaos in the room faded to nothing but us. He radiated with a warm light. I sighed, ready for him to take me. It was the closest I ever came, in all the times I would die, to feeling like I was going home. But then- "Rosebud." The word was clear. Crisp. And suddenly, I am not in the glass box sitting on the metal floor. The ghostly girl is no longer staring back at me. I can't see anything, but I know I'm somewhere else, far away. The coldness inside me is gone, and I hear Max. "Rosebud. Remember Rosebud, Al." Then, just as quickly, I was back on that metal floor, inside that glass box. As if I had been flung through time and space. "Rosebud?" I muttered in half-dazed remembrance. This simple word gave me something to grasp in the fog. An anchor. Rosebud. "Good." The voice over the speakers had materialized into a man crouched in front of me. The blurs of color and shadow collected themselves into coherent structures. I could see, finally. This man leaned close to me, so close that he filled my entire vision, studying my face for signs of recovery with a worried look that I would come to know well. "Who are you?" The question slurred over my tongue as my consciousness settled more firmly. The high-pitched alarm stopped. Worry melted from his face, and then he laughed. He had curly black hair and a week's worth of stubble that read more of a lack of time for shaving and less of a fashion statement. He looked a few years older than me-in actuality, he was ninety-six years younger-and there was a youthful vibrancy about him, an unsettled energy that was all too alluring. Stunned, I watched as he poked and prodded, checking my pulse and temperature. Searching for any markers of life. Before I could protest his intrusion, my attention was pulled to the world beyond the ghost girl's reflection. Outside of the glass wall was a dark medical lab. The large room was sparsely inhabited by strange machines that sat covered in cobwebs and disuse. The disarray of broken glass and trash littering the floor painted a clear picture that the lab had long been abandoned. Only a few of the lights worked, and the ones that did flickered in and out. Shadows cloaked the details. There was just enough light for me to see a blue logo on the wall: "CRYOLABS." Something then tugged at me from above-a feeling, a fear, the darkness maybe. Reluctantly, my eyes turned upward, and a gasp plunged through me. It was a harrowing sight: a terrible crane-like machine with arms and a metal hook that still clutched the opened body bag. My death reverberated through its robotic limbs. A long skinny needle stretched out from one of its arms. As I stared at it, the memory of a sharp pain prickled behind my ear. I instinctively reached up toward the sensation, and my fingers touched something metallic embedded in my skin. Before I could question it, the man started wiping my face roughly with a towel. "Stop!" I shouted and pushed him off, trying to cover my body. I once again became very aware of how naked I was. It seemed, at the exact same time, he did as well. He quickly looked away. "Who are you?" I demanded again, feigning a sense of authority. "Sorry. My name is Damien. I didn't mean to . . . uh-" The words he was looking for were rub my hands all over your naked body, but instead he jumped right to "We don't have time to do this right." A barrage of questions stampeded through my head: Who is "we"? Time to do what? But there was no time to ask them as Damien rustled through his bag and pulled out a simple white dress. He offered it to me, still averting his eyes. Eager to regain some dignity, I snatched the dress and slipped it on. Then I froze. I felt no hair on my head. It was just as my reflection showed. There wasn't much that I remembered about myself, but I knew that a shaved head was out of the ordinary for me. Yet here I was, almost entirely bald. My trembling hand gingerly grazed across the rough stubble until it eventually found its way behind my ear. My fingers traced a small metal device implanted into the skin. "You're okay. It's normal." Damien nodded, a slight blush still on his cheeks. He appeared nervous and unsure, beads of sweat trickled down his forehead. Whatever we were doing in this abandoned lab, whatever he was doing with me, it seemed to be the first time he'd done it. Or something had gone wrong. Or both. "What's happening? Where are we?" I asked, with less anger this time. It was clear Damien had a million things to say, but he restrained himself. "It'll come back. Just remember your trigger word." "What the hell is a trigger word?" He responded as matter-of-factly as if I had asked him what color the sky was: "Rosebud." I'm in a doctor's office. The haze of the medical lab is gone. Damien is gone. A leather chair rumples under my thighs. I'm wearing the blue dress I got at the flea market with my friend Andy two months before. I have my hair. And the coldness is gone, now nothing more than a nightmare. Was that all a dream? The doctor comes into the room and sits at his large desk in front of me quietly reading my chart. His white lab coat has a blue CryoLabs logo branded across the breast. He rocks back and forth in his chair rhythmically, never taking his glazed-over eyes off my folder. It seems as if he's about to fall asleep when he says, "Rosebud? Like in the movie Citizen Kane?" The north-of-middle-aged man leers at me, skeptically. "As I said before, this has to be an emotionally charged word for you. Not a nostalgic, ironic reference." I try to respond, but my mind aches, having been torn in so many directions. Two seconds ago, I was naked, covered in red mucus, sitting in a glass cage with a grinning man named Damien. And now I am in a doctor's office, having an inane conversation about the word "Rosebud." My response seems unnecessary as the doctor continues with little pause. "This is your trigger word. Your tether. The tool that will allow your brain to make sense of what has happened to your body. This process won't be easy. It's vital this word means something deeply important, or your body may reject it." Rejection. That's it. That's exactly how I feel. Like a transplant patient's body refusing its new foreign heart. "Well? Is Rosebud an emotionally charged word for you?" the doctor asks. Someone grabs my hand. I know who it is before I even turn. I feel my skin melt into his. His eyes find mine. It's Max. Not imaginary Max or angel Max. This is My Max. I fall in love with him all over again. "It's not ironic," I tell the doctor, not daring to tear my eyes away. The reality of that dark abandoned lab and Damien slides deeper into the recesses of my mind. This room and Max are as real as it gets. I think harder-trying to remember-knowing with every fiber of my being that the word Rosebud is important to me. To us. Then, in an instant, it comes to me. "He gives me rosebuds. The discarded ones that most people overlook and throw away. He saves them." Max's nose wrinkles, attempting to abate his tears, as he holds my cheek in his palm proudly. "It's our thing," I say confidently. Everything comes flooding back. I remember that I'm dying. Or I remember that I died. I can't decide. I remember my last moment and that darkness. That horrible darkness. I can't breathe. Max guides my eyes toward his. I melt. "Remember why we're here, Al." I search my brain for answers to questions I'm barely able to form. "Remember Rosebud," he urges. I know the answer. It's right there. It's in the blue CryoLabs logo etched into my memory. I researched. I raised money, a shit ton of money. I signed papers.
