Firestorm A novel

Taylor Moore

Book - 2022

Special Agent Garrett Kohl has just taken down a dangerous and deadly cartel boss when he finds trouble brewing back on his family's homestead. A powerful energy consortium, Talon Corporation, has started an aggressive mining operation that threatens to destroy Garrett's land, his family's way of life, and everything they hold dear. To achieve its goals, Talon is flouting the law, bribing public officials, and meeting anyone who challenges it with physical violence. When the Kohls themselves are attacked by Talon guards, Garrett goes on the offensive, embarking on an investigation that he hopes will rid the Texas High Plains of the intruders once and for all. Garrett soon discovers that the company has origins in the dark hin...terlands of countries across the globe. Using coercion and assassination levied by men from former Russian special operations forces, Talon is working on a highly secretive scheme to commandeer precious U.S. resources. The tit for tat exchange between Talon and the Kohls erupts into a full-scale war when Russian spy, Alexi Orlov, kidnaps Garrett's friend and ally, CIA operative Kim Manning. While Talon may be accustomed to getting its way in many places around the world, they have yet to encounter this rare breed of warrior down in Texas--a man who will fight to the death to protect those that he loves.

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Moore's solid sequel to 2021's Down Range finds Garrett Kohl--formerly a combat-seasoned Green Beret, a deep-cover narcotics officer for the DEA, and an off-the-books operator for the CIA--back home in West Texas from Afghanistan. His plan is to put down roots and make his family's ranch a viable moneymaking enterprise. However, he hasn't reckoned on the Talon Corporation or the political clout of its mysterious head. Talon has legally secured the mineral rights to a wide expanse of land, and the Kohl Ranch is right in its center. Talon's mining of rare earth minerals would wreak havoc on the landscape and destroy farming and grazing land while at the same time offering lucrative job opportunities. Garrett's battle to keep his pristine land from being destroyed puts him at odds with fellow Texans. This conflict morphs into something much more sinister--a deadly plot to undermine national security. The mix of Texas family drama and international intrigue can be uneasy at times, but Moore offers plenty of local color, and the action builds to a rootin'-tootin' and a whole lotta shootin' finale. Readers will look forward to Garrett's further adventures. (Aug.)

Moore brings back DEA Special Agent Garrett Kohl from his LJ-starred debut Down Range to battle more bad guys threatening his beloved Texas homestead and High Plains. W orking in concert with Russian agents, the energy consortium Talon is using bribery and violence to launch a rip-the-earth mining operation and corral the world's supply of rare earth minerals. Harsh exchanges between Talon and the Kohls are bad enough, but then Kohl's friend Kim Manning, a CIA operative, is kidnapped. With a 200,000-copy first printing.
