Review by Booklist Review

During the COVID lockdown, journalist Simon found herself low on shows to stream and tried a new activity called pickleball. She googled a few tutorials, had a blast playing a game with her (now) husband, and later wrote an article about pickleball as a "Perfect Pandemic Pastime" for The New York Times. Since then, she has expanded that story into this informative and helpful book about what has become a wildly popular sport. She begins with the game's invention in 1965 by three dads (with bored kids) in Washington State, and then, in a fluid, conversational format that's sure to appeal to pickleballers of all abilities, she covers the essentials, from the rules (including those for wheelchair players), to scoring, equipment, and pickleball leagues. (In case you're wondering, that "kitchen" in the subtitle refers to the non-volley zone on a pickleball court.) Pickleball, which can be played indoors or outdoors, in singles or doubles, may have been the "perfect pandemic pastime," but with an ever-growing number of enthusiasts (including seniors), it has long outgrown its origin story. A timely resource on the racquet sport of the moment.
