Review by Booklist Review

A self-proclaimed collector of women's art as well as an artist, teacher, and expert, Stein has gathered an assortment of works by women artists and cooperatives of women artists from areas all over the world (though more are from Stein's own home, the UK, than any other place). Some background information is provided regarding the place women's art and craft has historically been afforded in the fine-art world, with an emphasis on the ways in which women have found empowerment and pushed back on patriarchal systems through their art. The works collected here, predominantly textiles, are organized in sections dedicated either to an artist or to a technique or tradition specific to a group of women united by cultural group or geographic area. Written in the style many readers will associate with museum guides, the third-person text is focused on historical context and the way the art or technique developed and evolved within that context. While not a comprehensive guide, this book offers readers a wide variety of art and technique to appreciate.
