Review by Booklist Review

Sustainability is a worldwide goal, and this book showcases how libraries can contribute. The four editors and 17 other contributors are public and academic librarians (and two library architects), who all have substantial experience in this area. The editors assert that sustainability is created by environmentally sound, socially equitable, economically feasible practice. They also consider sustainability to be a professional core value that involves organizational culture, engaged staff, facility features, and underlying infrastructure. The book is arranged in three parts--covering leadership, planning, and programming--that detail nine library sustainability projects, and include end notes. Examples range from in-house waste reduction to green buildings and from public repair events to climate-action kits. The last three chapters are thought pieces about factors that can lead to sustainable and socially minded library transformation. Librarians will appreciate these practical strategies for community-based sustainability.
