The stand-in

Lily Chu

Book - 2022

"Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly 'friendly' boss, and yes she still hasn't gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she's healthy, she's (somewhat) happy, and she's (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie's world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in. The catch? Gracie will have to be escorted by Sam, the most attractive - and infuriating - man Gracie's ever met. If it means getting the money she needs for her mother, Gracie's i...n. Soon Gracie moves into a world of luxury she never knew existed. But resisting Sam, and playing the role of an elegant movie star, proves more difficult than she ever imagined - especially when she learns the real reason Fangli so desperately needs her help. In the end, all the lists in the world won't be able to help Gracie keep up this elaborate ruse without losing herself...and her heart." -- back cover.

DEBUT Chu's debut is the quintessential enemies-to-lovers story, with a heartwarming twist. Gracie Reed hates her job. She needs a change, or something exciting to shake things up. When two of the hottest Chinese actors in the world invite her to do a job for them, it's just the kind of excitement she needs--the money isn't bad, either. Wei Fangli needs a body double to give her some time out of the spotlight, and Gracie is practically her twin. The only problem is Fangli's acting partner, Sam Yao. He clearly distrusts Gracie and wants her gone. But after working closely with Sam, Gracie learns there's more to him than she ever guessed. Sam and Fangli's friendship is beautifully written, and it's clear the two care about and watch out for each other. With Gracie added to the mix, readers are in for a whirlwind of love--some platonic, some not. Gracie's biracial identity plays a significant role in the story, as does her mental health, making this an original, fun, and moving novel. VERDICT A first-tier purchase for libraries where contemporary and enemies-to-lovers romances are popular.--Amanda Toth
