PreS-K--Two siblings enjoy a busy day with their grandparents in this beginning reader. "Grandma, Grandpa! Here they are! Special day--hop in their car!" Eating pancakes at a restaurant, exploring a natural history museum, riding paddle boats in the park; then to the grandparents' home to watch old family movies, build a birdhouse, and play with the pet dog round out a fun-filled day for this brother and sister and their grandparents, who are all Black. The cheerful and energetic text has solid artwork to support the plot. For instance, "Animal shapes we can make. Rabbit, kitten, wiggly snake!" appears on a spread where the siblings play with modeling clay and a rabbit, kitten, and snake are on the table. Meanwhile, in the background, their grandparents are washing dishes, but keeping a watchful eye. Similarly, at a visit to the hardware store for birdhouse supplies, the items needed--wood, paintbrush, nails--are held in the hands of the smiling siblings who are clearly enjoying their day with their grandparents. The illustrations feature faint lines filled with color to reflect the ebullient mood of the text. VERDICT Bright colors and energetic text with simple rhyming sentences and phrases make this celebration of grandparents a winning title for the youngest beginning reader.--Ramarie Beaver
