The SOS Brigade, dedicated to tracking down time-travelers, aliens, and other strange individuals, deals with recruitment issues and conflict between their star member, Haruhi, and a seeming rival, Sasaki. Narrated by Kyon, the "normal" member, this Japanese import demands a reader patient with a slow and indirect narrative style as well as previous knowledge of the series.
