Review by Booklist Review

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi is a global phenomenon, now available in manhua or full-color comic form. The story focuses on Wei Wuxian, a demonic cultivator who died in a tumultuous battle; his trials after being summoned back to life to enact revenge for another young man; and his entanglement, particularly with fellow cultivator Lan Wangji. This entanglement is the driving force of this series, although the first volume only alludes to it. This is a story that moves lightning-fast and has quite a lot going on, with zombies, a rich and complex world, and a complicated system to understand. As an entry to this emerging genre, this manhua is probably the best option. The illustrations are beautiful, and the glossary in the back is helpful but not overwhelming. The translation work is superb, as the Mo Xiang Tong Xiu novels and surrounding media can be dense and complex, and conveying the meaning behind certain concepts can be even harder in the confined space of a graphic adaptation.
