Caroline Stamps

Book - 2022

"Learn how animals work in teams in the wild in this beautifully illustrated book. Discover why teamwork is so important for different groups of animals in the wild. Have you ever asked why birds swoop and soar in a flock? Or wondered where an army of ants is marching? This non-fiction book explains how animals work together to survive and thrive in the wild, and teaches children how important teamwork is, no matter how big or small a creature you are. Animal Teams takes young readers through a range of habitats, from snowy mountains to colourful coral reefs, to discover different groups of animals and how they work together to survive in their environments. Children will learn fascinating facts along the way. For example, did you know... that flying in flocks means birds can sleep as they fly?"--Publisher's description.

Review by School Library Journal Review

K-Gr 2--Six animal "teams" are the focus of this text highlighting the many ways different animals work for their mutual benefit and survival. The first animal featured is the starling and the text describes how the birds use their strength in numbers to stay safe and to find food. The illustrations are a mix of digitally produced images and photographs that further add to the information presented. Each animal (black-capped squirrel monkeys, gray wolves, leaf-cutter ants, Pacific sardines, European rabbits) is covered in two spreads that provide cursory information on different aspects of the animal's behaviors, habitats, and collective habits that are of benefit to the species. Not detailed enough for research unless the topic is on animal groups. VERDICT Unless aimed at animal enthusiasts looking for a different angle on wildlife, this book is interesting for browsing but not enough detail to merit purchase.--John Scott
