Review by Booklist Review

How often does an author trumpet "no art experience required" and mean it? South Africa native Grey felt a need to explore identity and belonging, and found answers through art, openly admitting she had no formal training. Her process, detailed here, is a sort of visual form of journaling, beginning with the from-scratch creation of a journal book to the connection with a world community. Aside from the usual projects (15-plus are included) and guest artists, it quickly becomes apparent that there are no rules, no set list of materials, and no absolute instructions. A few examples: Instead of following the color wheel, concentrate on favorite hues. Consider devoting the first 30 minutes of the day to "tiger time," a creative space to explore visual ideas. Get inspired by four different recipes and more than a dozen "prompts" or suggestions, such as writing in the third person or itemizing new individual learnings. Samples of a guest artist's works will spark creativity, as will Grey's constant reminder that the quantity of practice yields, eventually, quality results.
