Brujas The magic and power of witches of color

Lorraine Monteagut

Book - 2022

"Witchcraft has made a comeback in popular culture, especially among feminists. A growing subculture of witches, led by Afro-Caribbean immigrants, Indigenous Americans, and other witches of color, are reclaiming their ancestral traditions and contributing their voices to the feminist witchcraft today. Brujas chronicles the magical lives of these practitioners as they develop their healing arts, express their progressive politics, and extend their personal rituals into community activism. They are destigmatizing the "witch" of their ancestries and bringing persecuted traditions into the open to challenge cultural appropriation and spiritual consumerism. Part memoir, part ritual guide, Brujas empowers readers to decolonize ...their spiritual practices and connect with their own ancestors. Brujas reminds us that witchcraft is more than a trend-- it's an enduring movement."--page 2 of cover.

Review by Booklist Review

Young Afro-Latinx and Indigenous Americans are using their platforms to practice personal rituals and celebrate their culture. With the use of social media, Bruja practitioners ("witches" in Spanish, but referring to a wide net of traditions) have started communities, created movements, shared their stories, and continued their ancestral traditions. Monteagut, a professor of communications and Bruja practitioner herself, invites readers into the world of Brujas through stories from fellow practitioners and her own personal journey. Monteagut details the history of the Native people of Central and South America and the religious practices of West Africans and how they have blended together. Communities of Brujas arose as a way to counter the religion of colonizers and to keep Indigenous and African religions alive. This book covers magical ancestry, spiritual activism, and Bruja life. Featuring ritual exercises at the end of each chapter and resources connecting readers to other Bruja practitioners, this book is a love letter to the ancestors, matriarchs past and present, and the new generation looking to connect.
