Esther Abbott belongs to a sisterhood of Army nurses headed across the Pacific to the Philippines in 1941. Esther is rechristened by fellow nurse Virginia, a saucy Texan, who drawls, "Honey, you're too young to be an Esther. It makes you sound like a fifty-year-old orphanage headmistress who darns socks for fun. Let's call you Tess instead." Tess' life is good, with nursing, nightlife, and a new romance. Then Japan invades and occupies the Philippines, and Tess goes from living in a paradise draped in bougainvillea, near sandy beaches, to living in the squalor and mud of a battlefield hospital and then in an internment camp. Dutiful daughter Flor Dalisay, her sister Iris, and brothel boss Yasmin play heroic roles in their country's resistance, saving lives in ways they never dreamed possible. These wartime angels all join forces networking to help, heal, and save. In the final dangerous and chaotic days of war, can they ultimately save those they love most? Heroism, strong characters, and period dialogue shine in Hooper's (Fast Girls, 2020) latest.
