Review by Booklist Review

Yabsley's (Yoga, 2020; Miracle Juices, 2017) 80-plus recipes for DIY items for skin, body, hair, and cosmetics seem simple to concoct and use; except for self-massage, few complicated directions are included. Filling the book with helpful tips and facts (e.g., oats relieve feelings of stress), Yabsley paints an easy-to-do, good-for-the-environment picture of DIY beauty products. There are a few "buts": laundry lists of ingredients are often specified, and not necessarily stocked in the average personal pantry. Often, the shelf life of these homegrown products is short, equating to extra expense. And many recipes mandate the changing of daily habits--not always easy in the throes of shifting life circumstances. Yet it is good to know and understand the wisdom inside, such as five ingredients to avoid (from parabens to triclosan); plants that will fuel the make-your-own evolution (roses, rosemary, et al.); and natural remedies for ailments like eczema, dry skin, and oily hair. Beauty with a focus on the environmentally friendly.
