Misha first saw Sophia at a remarkable lecture showing what fear does to a child's heart. It's 1937 in Warsaw, and the lecturer, Dr. Janusz Korczak, recently lost his position giving a weekly radio broadcast on education because he is Jewish. In this breathtakingly poignant novel, Korczak's dedication to the children he cares for will face severe tests, as will Misha and Sophia's perseverance. Not long after Misha and Sophia marry, following an arduous flight from the Nazi invasion, they return to Warsaw to live in the Jewish ghetto. There they find Korczak, who has moved his children's home, which cares for more than 200 orphans, to the ghetto, where it becomes an oasis amid the despair of the hungry crowds. As they navigate the desperate conditions inside the ghetto, the courage of Korczak, Misha, and Sophia, along with the many acts of bravery by people doing what they can in the face of great danger, shine a light on the best of humanity, even in the face of the most inhumane acts.
