Stanley & Iris
Streaming video - 1990
The extraordinary team of director Martin Ritt and screenwriters Harriet Frank Jr. and Irving Ravetch join forces with two great actors, Jane Fonda and Robert De Niro, in this moving slice-of-life story. A hard-working widow (Fonda) in a dying New England town meets up with a diffident cook (De Niro). As they warily get to know each other, it’s revealed that Stanley, shy but smart, is also, somehow, illiterate. The tender-hearted but go-getting Iris becomes determined to teach him to read.
