Review by Booklist Review

The nervous, digestive, and neurological systems get lots of attention, while the lymphatic system is the overlooked "superhero" that cleans the body and defends against illness. When it works well, people feel vibrant. When it doesn't, they feel tired, constipated, and out of sorts, says Gainsley, a "lymphatic therapist." In this ode to the lymph, she provides instructions for how to self-massage (gently and horizontally) and eat right (yes to seaweed, mushrooms, and papaya but no to baked goods and gluten). With the help of veteran cowriter Moline, Gainsley explains why it's important to boost the immune system and reduce "lymphatic congestion." It may seem woo-woo, but Gainsley's clearly presented information and advice make sense. Why not reduce exposure to toxins (lead paint, mercury in tuna, eyelash glue)? And why not hydrate enthusiastically? "Our bodies are approximately 70 percent water; basically, we're aquariums!" A glossary helps with obscure terms like "popliteal lymph nodes" (the ones behind the knees). Readers will be inspired to take a walk, run an Epsom salt bath, and learn about an unduly taken-for-granted part of the body.
