Review by Booklist Review

Dr. Gabby Wild is a wild animal veterinarian who travels all over the world to treat a multitude of different animals, from dolphins, turtles, snakes, and bears to wolves, monkeys, spiders, and elephants. In fact, she says getting to know one particular baby elephant was what got her interested in becoming a vet in the first place. The book tracks her travels on six of the seven continents, beginning with South and Central America and ending with the remainder of North America. For each continent, she showcases over 80 of its wildlife species, most of which are endangered. Besides basic facts about habitat, diet, and dangers, she describes why she has been asked to treat the animal. Each two-page spread is similarly laid out, with a large heading, color photographs, and brightly colored text or photo insets on a solid background. Pages are busy, and font sizes and colors vary, though the instances where white text is printed on bright yellow or orange backgrounds can prove challenging to read. Charts, graphs, and maps further enhance this offering.

Review by Horn Book Review

In this lively, photo-packed offering, wildlife veterinarian (and eco-fashion model) Wild does more than discuss her work traveling the world to care for animals. Organized by continent, this book features profiles of over eighty species; each entry includes brief facts about an animal's habitat, behavior, diet, and threats, as well as text boxes with details about its care and "Gabby Says" anecdotes. The text also touches on geography, conservation efforts, and different cultural attitudes toward wildlife. Tips for vet training, list of wildlife conservation organizations, an extensive glossary, and an index conclude the volume. (c) Copyright 2023.
