Book - 2021

"London, 1893: Private enquiry agents Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn are called in to protect Tsesarevich Nicholas from nefarious forces as he travels to England for a royal wedding--in Dance with Death, the next mystery in Will Thomas's Barker & Llewelyn series. In June of 1893, the future Nicholas II travels to London for a royal wedding, bringing with him his private security force and his ballerina mistress, Mathilde Kchessinska. Rumored to be the target of a professional assassin known only as La Sylphide, and the subject of conspiracies against his life by his own family who covet his future throne, Nicholas is protected by not only private security, but the professional forces of both England and Russia. All of these ...measures prove inadequate when Prince George of England is attacked by an armed anarchist who mistakes him for Nicholas. As a result, Barker and Llewelyn are brought in to help track down the assassin and others who might conspire against the life of the tsesarevich. The investigations lead them down several paths, including Llewelyn's old nemesis, the assassin Sofia Ilyanova. With Barker and Llewelyn both surviving separate attempts on their lives, the race is on to find both the culprit and the assassin they hired. Taking them through high society (including a masked ball at Kensington Palace) and low, chasing down motives both personal and political, Barker and Llewelyn must solve the case of their life before the crime of the century is committed."--Provided by publisher.

Cyrus Barker, a tight-lipped and proper "enquiry agent" and his assistant, Thomas Llewelyn, are on their thirteenth case (after Lethal Pursuit, 2019). The stakes are high here and will keep readers on edge: a royal wedding is fast approaching, and Queen Victoria's relatives from the European royal houses have converged on London. One of the most illustrious guests is the young tresarevich of Russia, Nicky, the carefree and careless heir to the Russian throne who will become Nicholas II if he can survive an assassin's plan. Protecting the young man allows Barker and Llewelyn to flex their detecting muscles and display their determination and bravery. It also allows Thomas the opportunity to explore the intricate mechanism that is the British class system, especially when it comes to the meeting of workingmen and royalty. The street procession to the wedding is particularly immersive, and the dialogue--Llewelyn's sardonic comments on his work and on royal life--and Thomas' masterful depictions of jealousy and cunning also help drop readers right into the summer of 1893, along with the politics, danger, and romance that was the Romanovs' world. Recommend this to fans of the series and of Sherlock Holmes.

Set in 1893, Thomas's enjoyable 12th mystery featuring private inquiry agents Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn (after 2019's Lethal Pursuit) finds London awhirl with preparations for the wedding of Prince George and Princess Mary of Teck. Royal relations from Europe have come to celebrate the nuptials, including Nicholas, the son and heir of the Russian czar. Boxer Jim Hercules, a real-life Black man who served as a bodyguard to Nicholas, arrives at the offices of Barker and Llewelyn asking for their help in protecting the future czar. Their services are hampered by Nicholas's caprices, the Russian secret police, a ballerina with her eye on the throne, and an assassin known only as La Sylphide. Among the many historical figures who enliven the plot are Eleanor Marx, daughter of Karl, and William Morris, textile designer and confirmed Socialist. Thomas expertly entwines historical details, exciting action sequences, and a tender love story. This ripping yarn is sure to please series fans and garner new enthusiasts. Review by Kirkus Book Review

Two private inquiry agents combine their vastly different skill sets to rescue a foreign royal from death. Cyrus Barker is a tough-as-nails Scot with worldwide experience. Thomas Llewelyn is a scholar whose prospects were drastically limited when he was jailed unjustly. Knowing of their past successes as crime solvers, private security agent Jim Hercules approaches them on behalf of his boss, Nicholas Romanov, the czarevitch of Russia, whose life is in danger from an assassin known as La Sylphide. The two are on hand outside Kensington Palace just in time to stop a man from attacking Nicholas and his look-alike, the Duke of York, whose nuptials Nicholas has come to London to attend. Shockingly, the attacker is shot and killed from a distance by an unknown sniper with an air rifle. Nicholas is bored, reckless, and frustrated that he can't spend more time with his mistress, a volatile young Russian ballerina who was living in Paris. Barker and Llewelyn turn down medals for their bravery, but Barker angles for a royal warrant as they continue to protect Nicholas from his excesses while hunting for the assassin, whose connection to Llewelyn's past soon puts his marriage in jeopardy. The machinations of everyone from the British government to an anarchist cabal to Nicholas' relatives make their task difficult and dangerous. Historical figures whose fates we know add interest and irony to a mystery that's both cerebral and action-packed. Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
