Someone is out to harm the wealthy, powerful Compton family. With just days before the wedding of Jack Compton, who leads the Compton Foundation, to up-and-coming artist Claire Hunter at the opulent family villa on an Italian island, things start going awry. Despite elaborate security, an intruder breaks into Claire's Nashville home and is shot and killed, a body washes up at the island pier, Claire's bridal gown is found to have WHORE written on its back in blood, and the servers of Compton Computers (a company founded by Jack's father that rivals Apple and Microsoft) are hacked. As if this weren't enough, Claire still wonders about the death of Morgan, Jack's first wife, who fell or was pushed from a ledge on the island weeks after their marriage 10 years earlier. While the power behind the malevolence is not a surprise, Ellison keeps suspense at a high level, as she gradually reveals secrets at all turns: those of the company, of the Comptons in general, and of Claire and Jack in particular. An involving thriller well suited to its stunning setting.

When Nashville artist Claire Hunter, the narrator of this mesmerizing romantic suspense novel from bestseller Ellison (Good Girls Lie), and her fiancé, Jack Compton, the son of a computer company magnate, arrive on Isle Isola, Italy, for their wedding at the Compton family villa, Claire is alarmed to hear that skeletal remains were dug up at the villa during restoration work the day before. She feels better after Jack reassures her that such finds are common on an island with a long history, but it turns out to be a harbinger of more sinister things to come, such as hacking of the Comptons' private servers and discovery of the body of a family employee. Convinced that someone is trying to sabotage their wedding, Jack and Claire unite in an effort to identify the culprit before more lives are lost. Characters with secrets to hide and mysterious deaths, including that of Jack's first wife, who died in a sailing accident a decade earlier, add to the menacing atmosphere. Fans of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca will want to check out this compulsively readable tale. Agent: Scott Miller, Trident Media Group. (Mar.)
