Osteoporosis literally means "porous bones." If you did not build sufficient bone mass during your bone building years, you are at a lower threshold when you age. With the falling levels of estrogen (in women) and testosterone (in men) and its associated bone loss, you may have bone density below a normal level. Inadequate intake of calcium and vitamin D as a child and a number of other clinical risk factors will lead to osteoporosis. Some medications, although necessary, will cause bone depletion..
