Urban growth, decline and renewal

Streaming video - 2014

This program examines one of the world's largest urban redevelopment schemes and schows how a run down area of a city can be renewed. Sydney is Australia's largest city. The population of over 4 million is spread over one of the largest suburban areas of any city in the world. The State Government has a policy of urban consolidation to increase the densities in inner suburbs and reduce urban sprawl. The program examines the growth of Sydney and also the inner suburbs of Darling Harbour, Pyrmont and Ultimo. These old industrial and port suburbs were also the home of working men and women who toiled in the factories, warehouses, wharves and homes in what became areas of urban blight, decay and general decline. The population declin...ed with the loss of work. Reasons for this are examined as well as the transformation from the 1980s to the present into an attractive residential and commercial environment. The involvment of the government and developers and the results of planning and renewal in the City West Redevelopment are shown. Today a new, mainly younger community is living here. The characteristics and lifestyle sof residents is shown, including interviews.--Kanopy.
