Review by Booklist Review

Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon is one of six children whom the author raised as a single mother. Determined to keep her family focused and on track after her divorce, Kelly Rippon turns her home and herself into a do-it-yourself project, filling her house with inspiring plaques and bright colors and striving to help her children find their own paths. In this inspiring book, Rippon shares stories of struggles, successes, and lessons learned. Parents are influencers, says Rippon, identifying 10 areas in which their actions and attitudes plant seeds in children's lives. She begins with optimism, the importance of words, and keeping a sane perspective. Confidence breeds confidence; empathy breeds empathy. Grace and loyalty are important, and children thrive when they have good habits and accountability. And above all else is kindness. Raising an Olympian has special challenges, but Rippon is just as proud of her other five kids. What sets this apart from other parenting books are Rippon's core ideals in action. She's not above using mom tricks (claiming she had each of their fingerprints so she could always tell who was guilty), but always treats her kids with genuine respect and love. Now a motivational speaker, Rippon shares thoughtful insights, extensive experiences, and sound tips for everyone who interacts with children.
