Review by Booklist Review

Chicago romance novelist Genevieve Tibault is celebrating her pending divorce from straying husband Thad by joining her younger sister, New York surgeon Meghan, at a medical conference. Things go awry after a boozy dinner, when Gen leaves the hotel for a walk and vanishes. Distraught, Meg contacts police and finds that, as the last person to see Gen, she is now a person of interest in the case. As the narrative toggles between Gen in the past and Meg in the present, long-held secrets are revealed, as well as a recent betrayal and the building emotion it engenders. Gen, suspecting attorney Thad of infidelity given the increasingly long hours he was working, had hired a private investigator to confirm her suspicions, but the PI's finding so upset her equilibrium that she embarks on an ultimately destructive course of action that irretrievably alters the lives of those around her. Despite some plot elements that strain credulity, this fast-paced domestic thriller will hold readers' interest throughout.

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

This intriguing tale of love and betrayal from Tate (Such Dark Things) focuses on two outwardly close sisters, each with a big secret: Genevieve, a successful romance writer undergoing a contentious divorce, and Megan, a renowned surgeon with a loving husband and a five-year-old son. After the divorce is finalized, Gen agrees to meet Meg in New York City, where Meg has come for a convention, to celebrate. Late one night, Gen goes out for a walk from their hotel wearing Meg's coat and disappears. It eventually becomes clear that one of the two has set in motion a plan to expose a secret she hopes will harm the other sister. Only the secret is not what she thinks it is, and it may be too late to stop what she has put in motion. The agenda of a character with a family connection to the sisters complicates an already devious plot, and the intertwined secrets slowly emerge as the action builds to a tidy conclusion. Fans of domestic suspense will keep turning the pages to see what happens next. Agent: Kevan Lyon, Marsal Lyon Literary. (Dec.)
