Set in the early 1950s, bestseller Smith's exciting sequel to 2018's Courtney's War (also coauthored with Churchill) takes Saffron Courtney Meerbach, who served as a Special Operations Executive agent during WWII, and her husband, German war ace Gerhard Meerbach, whom she helped rescue from a concentration camp, to Kenya, where they settle into their own house on her parents' hundred-thousand-acre estate. Life for the couple is paradise, but the Mau Mau uprising looms, and the rebels against colonial oppression soon set their sights on the Courtneys and their estate. Meanwhile, Gerhard's Nazi war criminal brother, Konrad von Meerbach, has made off with the family money to an unknown destination. Saffron decides that Konrad must be hunted down and made to answer for his crimes. As usual, Smith juggles the multiple plotlines with aplomb, and the action never lets up.
