Review by Booklist Review

One effect of greater automation is increased demand for a computer literate workforce, especially programmers. This book introduces readers to several programming languages and computer tools: Scratch (object-based), Python (script-based), and HTML, CSS, and Java (used in web design). Each of the three parts of the book starts with an introduction to the language covered, its interface, and its structure, illustrated through sample code. Early in the first chapter, readers are provided an address for downloading the freeware needed to program. The last few chapters of each section contain projects designed to hone programming skills. Virtually all of the material here is freely available on the web, including YouTube videos and sample code. The value of this book, however, lies in the structure it provides for novice programmers to get comfortable with the language and its interface and its progression from easier to more difficult programming concepts and projects. Recommended for novice programmers who would rather work from a book than from multiple websites.
