Review by Booklist Review

This companion volume to The Very Short, Entirely True History of Unicorns (2019) offers a series of double-page spreads presenting mermaids as perceived or interpreted at various times: from old myths, mariners' sightings, and fairy tales to marine biology, movies, and a corporate logo. After opening with ancient myths and later folktales worldwide (summarized rather than retold), the discussion turns to Hans Christian Andersen, his story "The Little Mermaid," and the statue it inspired. Other informational topics include mermaid hoaxes, Florida's Weeki Wachee Springs mermaid show, and the sharks' egg cases known to beachcombers as mermaid's purses. While the text is smoothly written, the coverage of each topic is limited. In addition to the many attractive digital pictures and maps, there are photos of people, art, and artifacts. Following sections on mermaid food, seaweed, and mermaid hair comes a hands-on activity for creating "DIY Mermaid Hair" (green, blue, and purple streaks) using hair chalk and water. Better for browsing than research, this visually appealing book will find an audience among middle-grade mermaid fans.
