Michael J. Sullivan, 1961-

Book - 2019

"With Age of Myth, Age of Swords, and Age of War, fantasy master Michael J. Sullivan riveted readers with a tale of unlikely heroes locked in a desperate battle to save mankind. After years of warfare, humanity has gained the upper hand and has pushed the Fhrey to the edge of their homeland, but no farther. Now comes the pivotal moment. Persephone's plan to use the stalemate to seek peace is destroyed by an unexpected betrayal that threatens to hand victory to the Fhrey and leaves a dear friend in peril. Humanity's only hope lies in the legend of a witch, a forgotten song, and a simple garden door." -- Amazon.com.

Review by Booklist Review

In this installment of Sullivan's Legends of the First Empire series (after Age of War, 2018), the tides of war have shifted and Persephone, now leader of the Rhune, is seeking a treaty with the Fhrey. But the Rhune are betrayed, and the Fhrey kidnap Suri who was supposed to prove that the Rhune are more than the animals the Fhrey believe them to be. The impetus to rescue her comes from an unexpected quarter, inspired by one of Malcom's eerily accurate prophecies. A small, ragtag band sets out in search of a folkloric figure and a mysterious entrance into the Fhrey capital. The route is more difficult than anyone expected, and the bulk of the story focuses on the debate over whether or not they should even pursue such a risky option, which by all rights should be impossible. This is very much the middle of the epic, and it ends with more questions than answers, but readers invested in this world will certainly find the developments interesting, and there are sequels in the works that point to a solid resolution down the line.--Regina Schroeder Copyright 2019 Booklist
