Antichrist

DVD - 2010

In this graphic psychodrama, a grief-stricken man and woman retreat to a cabin deep in the woods after the accidental death of their infant son, only to find terror and violence at the hands of nature and, ultimately, each other. But this most confrontational work yet from one of contemporary cinema's most controversial artists is no mere provocation. It is a visually sublime, emotionally ravaging journey to the darkest corners of the possessed human mind.

Review by Library Journal Review

While a blissful couple (Willem Dafoe, Charlotte Gainsbourg) make love, their child wanders from his crib to an open window and falls to his death. At the husband's request, the wife retreats to their backwoods cabin to deal with her inconsolable grief, leading to a dark descent into madness amid nature run amok. Nose-thumbing director Lars von Trier's psychodrama offers graphic sex and cringe-inducing violence in pursuit of a provocative treatise on evil. For adventurous patrons served by like-minded libraries. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
