Average is the new awesome A manifesto for the rest of us

Samantha Matt

Book - 2020

"Crappy apartments, lame relationships, getting passed over for a great job (again)--not what we expected for our adult lives. Americans tell their children you can become anything! But let's face it--most of us can't. Sure, some of our peers go on to become astronauts or billionaires. But most of us don't. In Average Is the New Awesome, Samantha Matt offers encouragement to us regular humans. This is a manifesto for ordinary awesomeness--for the beauty that can be found when we acknowledge that good enough really is good enough, and that greatness is yours to define"--

Review by Library Journal Review

According to blogger Matt (ForeverTwentySomethings.com), many people spend much of their time and energy demeaning their own looks, accomplishments, and lifestyle. Matt encourages readers to adjust their attitudes toward what life should look like by letting go of exceptional expectations and stopping comparing oneself to others. She relates many of her own faux pas and says that striving for the happy medium is more than okay and that wild success can be a burden. Matt's closing line, "You are good enough," sums up the inspiration in this book. VERDICT This delightful, fun read will especially appeal to teens and readers in their 20s and 30s.
