Many crafters will recognize marbling, a technique invented by eleventh-century Japanese monks and continued by European artisans, from the endpapers of books, journal covers, and even old-fashioned gift packaging. Minneapolis artist Fletcher both explains the craft in a colorful, photographic step-by-step essay and revives it with an accessible, modern, and upscaled twist. Everything is laid out in sequence, with fun and helpful photographs on most pages, from setting up a studio (good news: expensive equipment is not necessary) to the general projects/ideas that could be enhanced by marbling. More than 30 patterns are based on what Fletcher calls the big four foundations: stone, getgel (Turkish for ""to come and go""), nonpareil, and chevron. From those, the magic begins: a getgel morphs into zebra look-alike. Stone takes on the elegance of moiré. And a chevron is transformed into an octopus copycat. The projects and details confirm that marbling's not just for the back of the book. Includes list of resources.--Barbara Jacobs Copyright 2019 Booklist
