Review by Booklist Review

This title from TIME Informational Text: Middle School series (24 titles) does a fine job of bringing an in-the-news topic to an audience who needs to begin honing their discernment skills. Moreover, this is accomplished with a pithy text that provides important information in digestible bites. The book discusses how and why deception in the news occurs, how to question what might be fake, and where to go to substantiate news. How to tell news from opinion is also explored. The visuals are a combination of stock photos and some rough original drawings, but there's also pertinent information given at times for instance, side-by-side edited photos. Small sidebars about often-ignored topics like proofreading are welcome. As with many series books, this contains questions for kids to ponder, which is a useful exercise.--Ilene Cooper Copyright 2018 Booklist
