Wonder Woman

G. Willow Wilson, 1982-

Book - 2019

"When Steve Trevor goes missing from a top secret military mission, Wonder Woman travels to the war-torn country of Durovnia to reclaim him. There, on the front lines, she encounters a familiar face -- or rather, an unfamiliar one. Her enemy Ares, god of war, former prisoner of the Amazons, is in Durovnia as well, but he has been utterly transformed, inside and out. Ares claims he now wants only to aid Diana in the struggle against tyranny, but should she trust him? Meanwhile, Steve encounters a second earthbound Olympian: Aphrodite. Can even the goddess of love help broker peace in a place so filled with hate?"--Inside book jacket.

Review by Booklist Review

After a cosmic paradox apparently shunted their world into nothingness, Greek gods and Amazons have become refugees on Earth. Faced with his own existential truth, the war god Ares seeks to redefine himself by inciting the titular just war, only to get straightened out both physically and philosophically by the ever-empathic Wonder Woman. More compelling still is the second arc contained herein: a media entrepreneur with the goddess of vengeance under her thumb looks to settle a grudge against "the unregulated, extrajudicial killing machines that call themselves costumed heroes." The tag-team art is handsome throughout, but it also hits its high mark in the second arc, with Merino's precision lines and classically heroic figures highlighted by expressive faces that convey potent rage, ferocity, and fortitude. Powering it all is Wilson's penchant for constructing an exciting story built on a foundation of meaningful and penetrating questions that touch on the political as well as the emotional and delineating rich characters in simple, elegant moments.
