Australia-born, Brookyn-based cook and food writer McKinnon (Neighborhood: Hearty Salads and Plant-Based Recipes from Home and Abroad) presents her interpretation of vegetarian comfort food with a diverse array of hearty recipes intended for family meals and gatherings. Menus vary in difficulty but would best suit a home cook already comfortable in the kitchen. The dishes, some of which are vegan and/or gluten free, include savory casseroles and bakes, relatively simple and fresh pastas, inventive salads, nutritious egg dishes, soups, a brief selection of desserts, and numerous recipes from the author's Cantonese heritage. In the later portion of the book, the author intermittently features personal recipes and stories from women of different backgrounds, placing the emphasis on family and community. Photographs by James Beard Award winner Brimble show McKinnon preparing and enjoying dishes with her family; short introductions to each recipe both personalize and enhance the project. VERDICT McKinnon delivers a strong selection of vegetarian recipes that can suit a variety of tastes. Recommended for medium and large collections where vegetarian cookbooks are in demand.--Emily Patti, Fox Lake District Lib., IL
