Using hearing aids

Harriet Brundle

Book - 2019

Many people are born with or develop hearing problems, which leads them to wear hearing aids. Readers learn about how these devices help those with hearing problems through accessible text and fact boxes that focus on science, technology, and guidance. The sensitive tone promotes self-acceptance for those who wear hearing aids, provides answers for those who may need them, and fosters a sense of empathy among readers who may know people with hearing problems. The imaginative illustrations, including colorful characters, make this an educational and entertaining learning experience for young readers.

Review by Booklist Review

The characters in this book are all ears! Well, oversize Eric Ear is anyway. Along with his friend, Harry Hearing Aid, they help young children understand what hearing aids are and how they work in this volume in the Human Body Helpers series (4 titles). Accompanied by large-scale, cartoonish (but never condescending) digital illustrations and diagrams of the inner ear, the simple text begins with an overview of the purpose of ears and continues with explanations of both behind-the-ear and in-the-ear hearing aids. In a reassuring tone, it also describes how hearing is evaluated by an audiologist, how hearing aids are customized to fit the wearer, and how the experience of wearing hearing aids may take some initial adjustment. Children will find this book useful and supportive.--Angela Leeper Copyright 2019 Booklist
