Far from Agrabah

Aisha Saeed

Book - 2019

"Princess Jasmine has always wanted more out of her life -- to travel beyond the palace walls, to get to know her people better ... to one day become sultana and lead Agrabah. Unfortunately, her overprotective father does not agree. And he keeps introducing her to foreign princes, including a strange -- if admittedly charming -- one named Ali. Prince Ali has a secret. He's not actually royalty from the far-off kingdom of ''Ababwa,'' as he's claimed to be. He's really Aladdin from the streets of Agrabah, who's stumbled upon an all-powerful genie and a magic carpet and used the first of three wishes to become a prince. Because he, too, longs for a different life. And when ''Prince Ali...9;' presents the magic carpet to Princess Jasmine, she agrees to embark on a journey with him ... and asks that he take her to his homeland, Ababwa. On an adventure in a fantastical kingdom, Aladdin and Jasmine get caught up in the magic therein. But soon sinister outside forces come into play, threatening to strand them there forever. Will they learn from legends past? Or will the alluring promise of a path to a new life get the best of them?"--Jacket flap.

Review by Kirkus Book Review

Follow Princess Jasmine and Aladdinin disguise as Prince Alion a new adventure into a magical world beyond Agrabah. After exploring Agrabah, Jasmine wants to see the prince's kingdom. Genie obligingly creates "Ababwa" to order, asking Aladdin to describe "the perfect kingdom." Aladdin's description is as enchanting as it is meaningful to him. He thinks of a courtyard, because "my mother loved the courtyards of Agrabah," and "It should also have a pretty fantastic menagerie," since he wants Jasmine to see "animals and birds she's never seen before." But once they're in Ababwa, Jasmine and Ali's return to Agrabah is threatened when the carpet is stolen by an embittered man named Abbas. Writing in alternating chapters from Aladdin's and Jasmine's points of view, Saeed also includes legends within the main story, some shedding light on Abbas' backstory. Although this veers from the story of Disney's Aladdin, many familiar elements are present. Saeed's Jasmine is a strong, smart woman with a love for maps, and she aspires to do well by her people, because "[they] are what make Agrabah beautiful. And they deserve a leader who knows that." Aladdin wants more from the world too, and the adventure causes him to question his lies to Jasmine. Saeed powerfully captures both their emotions and the setting. For Aladdin fans who would enjoy a different journey. (Fantasy. 11-14) Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
