Squirrel in the museum

Vivian Vande Velde

Book - 2019

When Twitch hears that the school children are taking a field trip to the science museum, he decides he wants to join in the fun--so he stows away on the school bus and hides in a backpack to get in. But as always, not everyone is glad to see a squirrel in their midst. Pursued by security guards, Twitch turns the exhibits into his own private carnival rides--swinging on a Foucault pendulum, riding a model Mars Rover, and skittering across the Bernoulli air pressure table. Just when it seems like there's no escape, Twitch's chaotic romp turns up some surprises for the museum staff. . . . and a friendly boy in a wheelchair saves the day for the squirrel, sneaking him back out. For aspiring scientists, Squirrel in the Museum also inc...ludes an explanation of the scientific exhibits Twitch encounters--as told by the friendly science lab geckos.

Twitch, the schoolyard squirrel, returns to tell of his third adventure: secretly joining a class for their field trip to the science museum. Though he sneaks aboard the school bus without detection, the squirrel is soon discovered by museum guards, and a Keystone Cops-style chase ensues, with the staff befuddled, the students enthralled, exhibits left in disarray, and Twitch triumphant in the end. Infused with humor, the narrative offers the squirrel's point of view, but in settings familiar to kids. Björkman's lively ink drawings will bring smiles and even laughs. When a reader requests a short, funny chapter book, hope that this one's on the shelf.--Carolyn Phelan Copyright 2019 Booklist

Twitch the squirrel returns in his third book, this time wreaking havoc at the science museum. On the advice of science-savvy classroom geckos, Twitch stows away on a field-trip bus. Once at the museum, he faces dangers such as animatronic dinosaurs, a revolving postcard display rack, a remote-control Mars Rover model, a Foucault pendulum, and more--with hilarious results. Plentiful black-and-white illustrations depict the mayhem. (c) Copyright 2019. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Schoolyard squirrel Twitch has scientific questions but no answers, so he joins a class trip to the Galileo Museum and Science Center.Stowing away on the school bus is just the first of Twitch's adventures on this field trip, all breathlessly recounted in a first-person, present-tense narration that exposes his squirrel-centered understanding of the world. Chapter-book readers will both recognize his quirks, including his preoccupation with food, and enjoy a sense of superiority in their wider understanding. For this third title in a series that began with 8 Class Pets + 1 Squirrel 1 Dog = Chaos (2011), the author-illustrator pair have perfected their formula for entertainmenta limited perspective, slapstick humor, and nonstop action. Twitch is protected inside the museum by a white boy who uses a wheelchair, often shown among his racially diverse classmates in Bjrkman's amusing sketches. Other images show Twitch atop an astonished girl's head, scaring her more than the animatronic T. Rex behind her; Twitch wreaking havoc in the museum's gift shop; driving a model Mars rover; and flying over a Bernoulli air pressure table. Framed by conversations with science lab geckos Galileo and Newton (among the narrators in the first book), these Twitch episodes stand alone but will certainly lead readers and listeners to look for more. This field trip to remember will appeal to eager chapter-book readers, fans of talking-animal stories, and teachers looking for an engaging read-aloud.
