Sister BFFs

Philippa Rice

Book - 2018

Sister BFFs follows a pair of sisters who are not quite adults, but trying desperately to act like them. From job searches to embarrassing encounters with former crushes, these twenty-something sisters navigate the ups, downs, and in-betweens of early adulthood - together. Loosely based on the author's own life, Sister BFFs celebrates the complicated love-hate relationship between sisters to hilarious effect. They tease and trick each other but always stay loyal.

Review by Booklist Review

In Rice's relatable collection of comics, two grown sisters live back at home, where they squabble as often as they reconcile. In one story, the younger sister interrupts the older sister's bath; she promises she's only going to pee, but the older sister storms out when she realizes what's really happening. In another chapter, the older sister recognizes a cool guy from high school at the grocery store, so the younger sister gussies her up in the cosmetic aisle, giving her the confidence to face him. Rice draws her characters with the simple looseness and buoyancy of a bubble letter, and their beak-like lips lend a cartoonish effect to the wry dialogue. Her humorous even unflattering illustrations center around the familiarity of a sisterly bond, such as when they exercise in their underwear while chowing down on cereal. Some sections are told entirely in text message, usually with one sister riffing a joke at the other sister's expense. Recommend this one to close siblings, but be warned they'll probably use it as fodder for extra teasing.--Biz Hyzy Copyright 2018 Booklist
