The summer cottage

Viola Shipman

Book - 2019

"Adie Lou Kruger's ex never understood her affection for what her parents called their Cozy Cottage, the charming, ramshackle summer home--complete with its own set of rules for relaxing--that she's inherited on Lake Michigan. But despite the fact she's facing a broken marriage and empty nest, and middle age is looming in the distance, memories of happy childhoods on the beach give her reason for hope. She's determined not to let her husband's affair with a grad student reduce her to a cliché, or to waste one more minute in a career she doesn't love, so it becomes clear what Adie Lou must do: rebuild her life and restore her cottage shingle by shingle, on her terms. But converting the beloved, weather-beat...en structure into a bed-and-breakfast isn't quite the efficient home-reno experience she's seen on TV. Pushback from Saugatuck's contentious preservation society, costly surprises and demanding guests were not part of the plan. But as the cottage comes back to life, Adie Lou does, too, finding support in unexpected places and a new love story on the horizon. One cottage rule at a time, Adie Lou reclaims her own strength, history and joy by rediscovering the magic in every sunset and sandcastle"--inside cover.

Creaky Cottage has been in Adie Lou's family for generations, and it's always been her happy place. When she's divorced by her cheating husband, she leaves her fancy house and job in Chicago and heads to the summer cottage on the shores of Lake Michigan. Encouraged by her 19-year-old son, Evan, she decides to make Creaky Cottage into a year-round B&B, in the process reconnecting with old summertime friends. Set in an idyllic small town and populated by charming, lovable characters, Shipman's (The Hope Chest) novel offers a soothing alternative to the chaotic world around us. Adie Lou's goodness in thought and deed feels authentic, and her quirks make her realistic. Her friends, family, and B&B customers are also full of good intentions blended with enough sass to remain saccharine-free. The challenges in turning the cottage into a paying venture do conveniently lead to amazingly positive results, but who could begrudge these characters their happy ending? -VERDICT Share this wholesome story with fans of Ann B. Ross, Lynne Hinton, Meg Waite Clayton, or readers looking for a contemporary novel focused on personal empowerment. [See Prepub Alert, 10/29/19.]-Stacey Hayman, Rocky River P.L., OH © Copyright 2019.
