A robot world

Clive Gifford

Book - 2018

In today's wired world, robots are everywhere, from movies, in space, as part of computer games--maybe even walking among us. This is a look at their rise: how they've developed over time, from early sketches to terrifying battlebots and factory operatives, to the latest AIs running free from their workshops. Presented chronologically, this robot history explores landmark robots that have captured the imagination, including creations from popular culture.

Gr 3-5-Robots are an evergreen topic among students-and this book is a fine addition to collections who serve youngsters. Large, bright photos and plenty of white space allow for kids to linger on each spread and gain valuable knowledge from the factoids peppered throughout. Over 20 androids are introduced, from fictional movie ones (WALL-E, R2-D2) to real-life robots that help the military, in space, in hospitals, and under the ocean. More recent inventions like Asimo NAO and RoboThespian are also covered. Ending with the future of automatons, a simple how-to activity, and a host of back matter resources (including a thorough index and a listing of videos, crafts, and game sites), this title is as enjoyable as it is informative. VERDICT Students interested in robotics will greatly benefit as will kids just looking for something to browse. Evoking vintage sci-fi posters in its graphic design and large format, this sprawling introduction alternates focus between real robotics history and functions and fictional bots such as R2-D2 and Transformers. Each busy two-page spread features a different topic within the expanding technological subject, and captioned photographs act as signposts in a visual tour of the robot world.
