Review by Booklist Review

As Greg, Wirt, and Beatrice are up to their usual bickering while trudging through the forest, they tumble down an embankment and into a river, only to emerge next to the graveyard in their hometown with their worried friends looking on. Home sweet home, right? Not quite. Fans of Over the Garden Wall will notice some familiar details from the conclusion of the critically acclaimed miniseries Wirt panicking about his crush hearing his poetry, the interloper Jason Funderberker but some things don't quite line up. If everything's back to normal, why, for instance, is Beatrice still a bluebird? With the same odd, dark tenor of the miniseries and an art style strongly resembling the animated cartoon, this cleverly skews the conclusion of the show with some playful misdirection. Small visual clues that Greg and Wirt might be in danger gradually accumulate, sliding the story into the realm of a spooky, dreamlike fantasy that, as always, is punctuated with delightfully oddball humor. Fans of the TV show will be charmed by this sneaky return to the plot arc of the original cartoon.--Sarah Hunter Copyright 2018 Booklist
