Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 2-4-Well-written, informative titles trace the history, development, and significance of iconic symbols. Each volume includes high-quality color photos, and, where applicable, contemporary drawings, maps, and time lines. At the beginning and end of each volume, the cartoon Cody the Koala introduces a QR code (and themed website) and invites readers to scan it to access videos and activities. Helpfully wrapping up each title is a "Making Connections" page with critical-thinking questions in three categories: "Text-to-Self," "Text-to-Text," and "Text-to-World." Mount Rushmore is noteworthy for mentioning that the U.S. government stole Lakota lands for the monument's creation and that no Native American leaders are represented there. The White House includes photos of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump. VERDICT A solid choice for middle grade students. © Copyright 2018.
