Duck Dynasty star Robertson (Happy, Happy, Happy)argues in this spirited but limited polemic that America is embroiled in a state of incivility, chaos, and hate because it has turned its back on God. Robertson, who grew up in the church but veered into a wild life of drugs, drinking, and womanizing, returned to Christianity after his wife left him (they eventually reconciled). Each chapter sets forth a statement that Robertson claims is a lie ("God is dead"; "Sex is for self-gratification"), which he counters with passages from the Bible, as when he argues against the hypersexualization of society and holds up much of rural America as Christian and moral (as opposed to the media-controlled urban centers). He includes the occasional anecdote of him sharing his spiritual beliefs with others, including President Trump (who Robertson reports is a devout Christian), but most of the book is prescriptive, and reading it feels like being upbraided by a passionate preacher. The exhortations get tiresome, with Robertson's excessive use of religious rhetoric coming off as stale. His arguments also suffer from a simplistic dismissal of those who disagree with him as "left-wingers." This lack of nuance will turn off many readers, but Robertson's tone will undoubtedly appeal to those fans eager for his thoughts on the current state of America. (Feb.) Star of Aand E's Duck Dynasty, Phil Robertson exposes the ten lies the devil has attempted to use to destroy America's soul and offers ten truths that if acted on would put God back into culture and turn the country around.Review by Publisher Summary 2
It’s time to take back what the devil has stolen and put God back into our culture. The Theft of America’s Soul is a prophetic wake-up call for all who desire to see our nation thrive, challenging readers to exchange these ten lies for truths that will bring peace of mind, harmony, and prosperity back to our country—an invitation to experience the life-giving, peace-filling, wholly-transforming love of God.Phil Robertson, patriarch of A&E’s Duck Dynasty and one of the most recognized voices of conservative Christianity in America, believes that little by little, generation by generation, America has allowed the lines of morality, decency, and virtue to be erased. Our values have disappeared as we began to believe lies—such as that God is dead, truth is relative, and unity is impossible—that have brought discord, division and protest. But Phil also believes that things can change.Writing with captivating storytelling and unflinching honesty, Phil shows how to make America a God-honoring nation once more: by dropping the ten central lies that rule our day, includingGod is deadThere is no DevilTruth is relativeSex is for self-gratification
